Thoughts on DC Rebirth Special #1

Wrote really quick on my overall thoughts and quick summary about DC Rebirth Special #1

DC Comics’ Rebirth Special #1 was full of nostalgia and showcases how DC as a whole wants to get back to how most of their characters were before The New 52.  It’s wasn’t a reboot a story featuring Wally West who has been trapped outside of time and space itself trying to figure out a way to get back to the main universe that Barry Allen created at the end of Flashpoint which was the creation of The New 52.  The way Geoff Johns wrote Wally West’s struggle in trying to contact his past friends was very heartfelt and emotional.  But eventually got Barry Allen to remember who he was.

Wally told Barry that it wasn’t Barry’s fault that The New 52 was created.  Someone else is sort of pulling the strings and Barry was used as a pawn.  At the end of the Flashpoint story, The New 52 was created as a result of different universes combining into one universe.  Many people thought that all of the pre-Flashpoint continuity was fully rebooted, but it wasn’t.  Some of it was completely rebooted and some of it the history was kept for The New 52.  However Wally revealed that some of the continuity that readers thought that it was rebooted was actually stolen away from them.

Someone took all the love, friendships, relationships, and happy moments from them.  Approximately 10 years of history is missing or changed or forgotten.  It’s really confusing but it was revealed that the Watchmen are involve are the cause of it but no one knows it.  Wally doesn’t know that it is the Watchmen but he knows someone is out there and he told Barry and Bruce Wayne about this.  They know about it but from what DC is planning to do about this story is that it will probably sit on the shelf for a good amount of time before having the main DC characters face-off against the Watchmen or whatever is left of them.

A lot of people are angry because they hate that the Watchmen are about to be involved with the main DC universe.  Many believe that the Watchmen’s story and their universe should be left untouched.  In my opinion, I agree with those people because the way Watchmen felt to me when I first read it is that this is a separate story that feels perfect in it’s own universe.  However the way Geoff Johns wrote DC Rebirth really had me thinking about how this affects the Watchmen timeline.  The only way that I won’t be upset about DC choosing to crossover with the Watchmen is that this new story doesn’t mess up the events that happened within Watchmen, that DC Rebirth #1 takes place well after the ending of Watchmen.  This means that both the Comedian and Rorschach are still dead.  Obviously at the end of DC Rebirth #1 it seems as if Ozymandias and Doctor Manhattan are together on planet Mars (not sure if it’s in the Watchmen universe or DC Universe).  The whereabouts of Silk Spectre and Nite Owl are unknown but they were alive at the end of Watchmen.  It is possible that there can be new members of Watchmen to continue the DC Rebirth story but it’s too early to make solid predictions.

Overall the story was phenomenally written by Geoff Johns and the ending definitely intrigues me.  I am not upset at the Watchmen usage like a lot of people but I totally understand their viewpoint.  But I have always loved Geoff Johns’ work at DC so I trust he will do some good with this story.
